Need an emergency plumber? Signs you’ve got a leak

Do you know the signs to look out for when it comes to identifying and fixing a leak? Even a slow leak can quickly cause damage to your home’s structure, including damaged flooring, walls, and more.

We make our way through the most common wet rooms in the house, helping you to identify the signs of a leak.

Need an emergency plumber to solve a leak issue in your home? Don’t delay; call now!

Roof leak

Roof leak

The most obvious sign to look for if you suspect a roof leak is a water stain or even slight discolouration of your ceiling or walls. If this damage worsens, you risk not only the nasty growth of mould or mildew in the house, but it can also compromise your home’s structural integrity.

Remember, you don’t necessarily need to identify a massive stain on the wall; internally, the leak could be hugely damaging, but the visible evidence may only be slight. Look carefully for even small patches of dampness on your walls and ceilings.

Roof tiles

Often easier said than done, but keeping an eye on any cracked or missing roof tiles can help you determine the possible source of a roof leak.

Even if you cant see visible water damage in your home, water could be leaking into and damaging an attic or crawl space.

Blocked gutters can also contribute to roof leaks.

Toilet and shower leak

Toilet leak

One of the most common leaks in the home is at the toilet flange. The flange is the spot at the base of the toilet where it meets the floor. This is where waste exits after you flush, and even if the leak seems insignificant on the surface (i.e. on your bathroom floor), any water trapped beneath can quickly rot and disintegrate floor surfaces as well as under-floor structure.

You may notice a small amount of water splashing out of the base each time you flush the toilet.

This is a typical sign if the sealant around the base of the toilet has weakened. Before it gets any worse, make sure you seek plumbing assistance as soon as you notice these early signs.

Shower leak

Faulty appliances are indeed common causes of shower leaks, but the problem can be much deeper, too: it can lie within the shower’s foundations, pipes, and wall sheets.

Keep an eye out for:

  • “Curling” flooring (like vinyl or laminate)
  • Loose tiles
  • Water stains
  • Signs of mould
  • Peeling paint

If you’ve noticed water leaks around the base of your shower, don’t delay in getting the issue inspected and rectified. As with toilet leaks, any sitting water below the surface can quickly rot a home’s structure and flooring. The key is to try to catch a leak early!

Kitchen leak

Signs to look out for that might indicate a leak in the kitchen include:

  • Discolouration and softening of flooring
  • Loose tiles sitting atop soft foundations
  • Dampness underneath the sink
  • Unexplained water found around taps or on bench tops

An untreated leak is often proportional to the amount of damage that is caused: spot the signs early and get it treated sooner by an emergency plumber to avoid paying for it in the long run!

Emergency plumber

Other signs you may need an emergency plumber

  • Weird gurgling coming from you sink, shower, or toilet
  • Slowly draining water
  • Weak water pressure
  • Unexplained high water bills

Unusually high water bill

Noticing an unusually high water bill might be the first sign that really makes you sit up and wonder what on earth may be going on with your home’s plumbing and water system.

If you’re going to dig up old invoices to compare, ensure you look beyond the dollar value; look at actual water usage, too. This way, your perceptions won’t be skewed by naturally rising water rates.
